50 Lashes with a Wet Noodle

Oh, Friends of Bunting, how remiss we have been. Has it truly been almost two months since we updated you on the goings-on of our resident hybrid boy?

We have no excuse.

However, we do have photos of a rather cute kid.
100_2213
Yes. He is coloring with crayons. He learned how to do this by watching the 'big kids' (ie the 3 and 4 year-olds) draw. Alas, this also means that he has figured out that crayons, pens, etc. leave marks, whereas previously he would just clutch them in his hand. You people know where this is going, I'm sure. For the sake of our cabinetry and furniture, all writing/marking implements must be corralled and in non-Bunting accessible areas. This region is shrinking by the hour. Soon all of our possessions with have to be kept in bags strung from the ceiling.  You know- like when you camp and try to keep the bears from stealing your food.
100_2187
As soon as I am finished riding this here zebra whilst wearing Winnie the Pooh ears, those pens will be mine.

Our boy is 16 months old, and boy is he a busy bee.
At his 15 month check up his stats were thus:

Weight: 26.5 lbs-- 80th percentile.
We have a hard time fathoming that there are kids who weigh more than him at this age. This kid is like a wet bag of rice. My left arm continues to remain super strong from toting him around. It is at least as strong as my right, which was certainly not the case B.B. (before Bunting).

Did I tell you about the time a few months back that I was lotioning after a shower, and felt a lump, on the outer aspect of my arm, right under the cap of my shoulder? And that due to my cumulative life circumstances, I immediately concluded that I had some sort of terminal arm muscle cancer? But really it was a heretofore unused but now highly developed deltoid muscle? Moral of the story: having babies gives you ripped arms. Put it in the 'pro' column.

Dr. H's office, 2 months old.  Look at the widdle turtle baby!!!!

Height: 33 inches -- 93rd percentile.
WHAT?!!? I sit here as I type this, a solid 5'2", the daughter of a woman who claimed to be 5'0" but was probably 4'11" first thing in the morning before her vertebra compressed. FRK is 5'11"-ish, which is guess is on the tall side. But still. Who knows if this trend will continue, but this kid has been long and tall since day one, and it is a head scratcher.

Head circumference: 51 centimeters-- giant percentile. Above the curve.
Once again, the M.A. measured his head twice, because she was sure she misread or mismeasured the first time. Then she said "I hope you had a c-section". Oh, what a cut-up. Anyway, as I have mentioned before, we are big- headed people. My sister married a big-headed person. Bunting will almost certainly have big-headed cousins. Katie bar the door, one day there will be a little pack of giant-headed half Pengs roaming the Western seaboard. Oh yes.

Dr. H's office, 15 months old. The back of his hair needs to be trimmed, so it is a wee bit fluffy- but he does have a tremendous amount of back head.

Our camera is terrible, but look at this! Look at the curls! How can I cut that off? How!?!?!

100_2215
Oh, kill me with the sleeping cuteness. The enormitude of the noggin is nicely on display here.

Our boy has always concentrated his energies on his gross motor development. His passion for climbing things continues unabated:
100_2255
Mephers make for excellent jungle gyms
100_2113
Climbed up on the couch on his own. Deeply pleased with himself.

But now his verbal development has begun to grow, and it is so entertaining.

He is a hilarious little mimic. Mepher gave him her old iPhone (tchhhhh- don't say a word. It is old and Auntie prerogative trumps all), and he loves the thing. He knows how to turn on the iPod function, (he will be tootling along and then suddenly we hear The Cranberries playing), and he obviously has been watching his father closely, because when he hears a phone ring he will glance at the screen, jab at it with his finger, put it up to his ear, and then leave the room.

Making a business call, double fisting iPhones
100_2091
Oh young people today, with the driving and texting. So unsafe.
100_2222
More Auntie prerogative: when the baby wants 8 Akmak crackers, you give him 8 crackers.
100_2070
I love my Mepher. Also, electric toothbrushes.
100_2247
Beefcake shot. Also, more electric toothbrush.

He continues to be an enthusiastic omnivore, and now insists on using his own utensils. Our friend Pilar gave us some straw sippy cups and toddler utensils a few months back. I figured they would come in handy, but not for some time. Oh woe is me, I was wrong, soooo wrong.
Farewell, baby spoons
Heartbreak in a ziploc bag. He refuses to have anything to do with baby sized spoons of any sort. Metal please, or a big plastic one. Thank you.
100_2210
Mmmmm. Yogurt. Mama has mess issues (ironic much?, considering what she does for a living), but boy oh boy does he enjoy feeding himself.

How adorable is my Baby Daddy?! Love that man.

FRK's grandfather Snuffy (Bunting's namesake) made fantastic omelets. FRK is continuing the tradition, and Bunting absolutely loves them. With pepper jack cheese- he just can't get enough. Witness:

For the fellas, it's all about the omelet. Myself, it's all about the coffee. Can you hear the excitement in my voice?

100_2121
Straw cup. Pilar gave us 2 of these cups, along with approximately 30 pristine, unused, replacement straws and valves. When the zombie apocalypse happens, I know we will be fine, because we have Pilar.

Anyone who knows me even a little bit knows that I am crazy about books. So it is with great joy and satisfaction that I watch Bunting's love for books grow every day. He not only loves being read to (we have been reading to him pretty much from the beginning, but now he really seems to enjoy it, and has definite preferences for certain books), but increasingly we find him sitting with a book, 'reading' to himself. I find this development very exciting because: A) please see previous reference to my bookmania, and B) up to this point Bunting has had only two speeds-- totally asleep and moving, moving, moving.

The following clip is especially sweet because the book he is reading is "Twinkle Twinkle" by Iza Trapani. It is a great favorite of my sister and myself.  We read it innumerable times to the kids that we nannied for, especially BRH and OGO (seen below at Mepher's wedding)
OGO in particular loved this book, and when she got to a particular page she would say "wheeeeeee!" and Mepher and I would die from the cuteness.

The entire book is sung to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Please note that my amazing doodle bug is attempting to sing "up above the" at the very beginning. Also note the glider, yet another Pilar-me-down. The cushions are leather. When I was her nanny and it had not yet been bequeathed to me, I thought that the leather was an aesthetic choice. It seemed a bit much, but she and her husband take their furniture seriously. People, I am here to tell you: IF YOU BUY A GLIDER GET LEATHER CUSHIONS. If you aren't familiar with babies, I shan't frighten you with too much detail, I'll just say that leather wipes clean in a jiffy, and upholstery does not.

The weather has turned lovely and sunny, and so we turned our attention to our garden.  When Bunting was in utero one of the things we dreamed about was puttering around the garden with our boy. Again, it was something we thought we would have to wait a bit longer to enjoy. Bunting adores being outside in the sunshine. He putters and babbles and collects rocks, stuffs pulled weeds into his bucket and dumps it out, creating auxiliary piles. I gave him some buckets, a little plastic pot full of soil, a trowel, and a plastic spoon to dig with. Well, we already discussed his rapidly increasing prowess with spoons, so you can guess what he did right off the bat:

He only tried it once.
He is Daddy's loyal assistant, he trails him around and wants in on whatever task is at hand.

Gardening boy
And then he assists with cleaning up. He's a keeper!

Mepher and Josh continue to come over every week for family time. We are so blessed and lucky to have them so close by.
100_2260

We Peng girls can get a little punchy when we are together with Bunting

Bunting continues to be an Olympic caliber sleeper, and for that we are so very, very grateful. Here he is right before bedtime:
100_2166
The cast of bedtime characters, clockwise: Al the bear (made of alpaca fur and so incredibly soft), Silky, Taggie, Grandma J blankie, Auntie Audra blankie, Ribb Scribb in Bunting's hand. Ribb Scribb is the main dude. Bedtime doesn't happen without Ribb Scribb.
100_2168
He only sucks his thumb when Ribb Scribb is in his arms. Have never seen it any other time.

The sleep fuels shenanigans such as this. Acres of grass and sidewalk, all he wants is to hang out in the parking lot.
Part I:

Part II

Part III

Our life is so full right now- full of the best and the worst that life has to offer. Every day we are struck anew with wonder and love for our sweet, funny boy.
He makes every day seem right.

Cry, Weep, Gnash, Etcetera

Hello Friends!!!
100_2068
Happy baby boy in the middle of pillaging through the house. This is his main occupation nowadays. That orangey-brown stuff around his mouth is pork sung. He managed to get his mitts on the container, pry it open, and help himself. He likes it.

100_2036

Pillagers must rest and recuperate periodically.

100_1985
Mayhap I will see what is on the television.

Never fear- our tiny hero is not the one weeping and gnashing.
Though we have had the appearance of That Which Will Not Be Named (okay- one time. Will. Opinions. Obstinancy. His mother is so laid back. HOW CAN THIS BE!?!?!), it is entirely age appropriate, and mostly very funny. So sorry kid- go ahead and call Human Rights Watch, I'm not letting you suck on a battery. Deal with it.

Bunting's Mama is the one weeping and gnashing, for she is soooo not ready for her boy to be growing up so very fast. It's too much!! He is such a boy now. No trace of baby left.
100_2021

No more crawling. Or nursing. Or mushed up food. And as of yesterday- no more bottles.
100_1959
We take hydration very seriously around here
100_1953
Gratuitious bedhead and nom-nom cheek shot. I won't judge you if you lean in and and try to bite that cheekage through your monitor.

So. What's new in Buntingland, you ask?
Well, no more bottles. But we covered that already.
Oh yes- this:

Climbing2 collage
Yes. Your eyes do not deceive you. The child has figured out how to climb, lord have mercy. He climbs! Everything! Every waking moment.

Yesterday he pushed the footrest in his room over to the changing table, climbed up onto it, and was pondering how to climb up onto the changing table.

Today he figured out how to climb up onto the big easy chair at Gigi's house. He just hikes up his chubby little leg, way up past his hip, grabs whatever he can to get purchase and et voila! He's up.

100_2028
This. This is what things are like around here.
I need more coffee.

He is such a little engineer. A problem solver.
He found a piece of cellophane, and all on his own, figured out how to insert it into his ball popper toy, and then turn it on so it would shoot out.
See for yourself:

The insane wheezy laughter is yours truly. The artillery themed commentary is all FRK.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love folding tiny laundry? No? Well, I do. When I was a nanny, I always enjoyed putting the kidlets down for a nap, and sitting in a quiet house and folding tiny clothes.
100_2012

I still love it. I know that irrevocably, time marches on, and his clothes will get bigger and bigger.

This very day is the 2nd anniversary of Mama's death.
Mepher spent the day with us, which was wonderful. Oh how we miss her. How I wish Mama could meet my little boy. They would get on like peas and carrots. I can't believe that she is gone, and he will never know her.

So I sit and fold his little shirts and pants, and do my very best to live in this moment.
100_1944
Look at these yummy feet! He always hooks them on the tray like so.

And drink more coffee.

A Month Chock Full O' Milestones

I can't be the only one who has always wondered why on earth there is a coffee named "Chock Full O' Nuts"?  That doesn't seem like a desirable quality for coffee.  But that is neither here nor there. (I just can't stay away from Google. Before Google, I would actually call reference librarians and have them look things up for me. Oh yes. )

What is going on in the P-K household?
Big happenings. Muy grande.

I. And then he was One

Saints alive, how can a whole year have gone by already!
Where, oh where is my little baby?!  People, I am lodging a complaint.  I want my baby back.

Uncle Josh is always insisting he should wear a helmet. Done.

His birthday party was a hootenannie.  Our tiny house was chock full of friends and family, and we have never felt luckier and more loved. The Virginia grandparents flew out for the celebration, and for the first time in 22 years FRK's parents were in the same room together. It was very moving, and a momentous occasion for FRK and my sister in law.
Our friend Jennifer, Mamaji, longtime family friend Dr. Hopner, Gigi, Amanda, and Grandma Joanne. Grandpa Richard not shown, due to critical photographer obligations

Surrounded by friends, enjoying his loot

Grandpa Richard and Grandma Joanne bought a 'smash cake', so that he would have his very own cake to destroy and eat.  We had no idea how he would feel about it; though to date he has proven to be a cheerful omnivore, he's never really had any sweets or pastries. As evidenced below, he was a bit non-plussed initially, but soon became an enthusiastic convert.  Eventually I just cut him off; I had no idea how so much sugar would affect him.  It turns out, not at all.  He went down for his nap and then to bed as per usual.  What a weird and delightful kid.

This is a bit long...at 3:39 there is a triumphant arm in the air, and at 5:50 he really gets down to business

I also worried about how he would do around so many people, who were soooo excited about his birthday.  Would he be overwhelmed and clingy?  Would he remember his grandparents, or would he think them strangers?  No. Yes. No.  There's something elemental about his Grandpa Richard that Bunting recognizes and is attracted to; he thinks he is the bee's knees.

Why I worry about things like this I don't know.  For a solid year this child has proved time and again that he is an extreme social creature, a hambone and a showman.  And true to form, he took his first steps at his birthday party, surrounded by cheering masses.  He walked toward my sister and our little friend Marie, who was sitting in Mepher's lap.  I have known Marie since she was in utero, I was one of the first people to hold her beside her family.  And my sister. Well.  Words are woefully inadequate to express how momentous and powerful the moment was.

II. Bipedal Locomotion
So! He is now a walking guy.  And how.  He has simply given up crawling.  Completely. He was an Olympic caliber crawler.  Fast and efficient. But he's done with that now.

As you can also see, he's a babbling brook now. All day long.

He loves our pal Herbie

III. Fruit Bingeing

We eat a lot of apples around here, and I almost always have one in my handbag and my lunchbag. And I don't always remember to keep them zipped.

Mepher has always been crazy about fruit. When she was a little girl we had to keep all the fruit on top of the refrigerator- if she had access to it, she would just eat until it was gone. We refer to this as 'fruit bingeing'. This was particularly tragic when it came to stone fruit. Her favorite. Do you know what happens if you eat too much stone fruit? It's not good. (you have to eat A LOT of it).

Bunting takes after her in so many ways. And like her, is a fruit maniac.
apple collage
Yes, generally apples are not recommended for one year olds. However- Bunting has 13 teeth (4 more on the way). And we supervise closely. It's so cute. We can't resist.

Bunting's Mamaji is battling brain cancer, but is doing quite well. And getting some delicious snuggles with our boy.

She has always referred to him as the Joy Boy, and that is precisely what he is.
He is a nugget of sunshine and joy, and we are so lucky, so proud, so delighted that he is ours.
